BBQ Essentials: 8 Things You Actually

Most "BBQ gear" is optional. These basics cover prep, safety, heat control, and cleanup - the stuff that improves every cook.

  1.    Long tongs - safer turning and moving food.
  2.    Spatula - burgers, fish, and flipping without tearing.
  3.    Instant-read thermometer - removes guesswork (especially for chicken and thick steaks).
  4.    Heat-resistant gloves - lids, grates, and hot tools without stress.
  5.    Grill brush or scraper - clean grates cook better and stick less.
  6.    Drip trays or liners - easier maintenance, fewer flare-ups.
  7.    Cover - protects from UK rain and grime between cooks.
  8. Smoke booster (chips/pellets) - quick flavor upgrade even on gas.

    Simple maintenance routine (2 minutes)

Preheat 5 minutes, then brush grates.
After cooking: burn-off 2 to 3 minutes, brush again.
Empty grease/ash regularly to reduce flare-ups and keep airflow right.
Cover once fully cool and dry.
